Recreation Manager - Full-Time

Department:  Parks & Leisure Services
Reports To:  Director/Recreation Superintendent

FLSA: Non-Exempt
Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience. 

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Recreation Manager is responsible for the management, coordination, and oversight of recreation, athletic and aquatic programs and facilities. This role involves supervising staff, planning and organizing recreational activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of participants, managing budgets, and ensuring a high standard of service is maintained. The Recreation Manager will work closely with the Director/Recreation Superintendent to ensure all recreation, athletic and aquatic programs meet the needs of the community and comply with all relevant safety regulations and policies.

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:  

 

Program Developnent and Coordination:

  • Plan, develop, and implement recreation, athletic and aquatic programs for all age groups and skill levels.

  • Ensure programs align with the needs of the community, seasonal demand, and recreational trends.

  • Schedule athletic and aquatic events, leagues, and tournaments.

Staff Supervision and Training:

  • Hire, train, and supervise a team of recreation staff, lifeguards, coaches, and volunteers.

  • Provide ongoing performance evaluations, feedback, and professional development opportunities.

  • Ensure that staff adhere to safety protocols and provide excellent customer service.

Facility Management:

  • Oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of recreation, athletic and aquatic facilities, ensuring they are in safe and operational condition.

  • Ensure that all equipment and resources are adequately stocked, maintained, and inspected regularly.

  • Work with facilities staff to ensure that all necessary safety checks (e.g., water quality testing, pool temperature, equipment inspections) are conducted.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Assist with budget planning for recreation, athletic and aquatic programs, ensuring the efficient use of resources.

  • Monitor program expenses and recommend cost-saving measures while maintaining high-quality services.

  • Develop and manage contracts for services, supplies, and other program-related needs.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all programs comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including safety, health, and accessibility standards.

  • Regularly conduct safety training for staff and ensure that emergency procedures are understood and practiced.

  • Monitor participant behavior and intervene as necessary to maintain a safe and positive environment.

Customer Service and Community Engagement:

  • Act as a liaison between the department, participants, and the community, responding to inquiries and concerns.

  • Promote recreational programs through marketing, social media, and community outreach.

  • Encourage community involvement and collaboration with local organizations, schools, and businesses.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain accurate records related to program participation, incident reports, and financial transactions.

  • Prepare reports on program outcomes, attendance, and other key performance indicators.

  • Assist with registration processes, including managing participant rosters and schedules.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Public Administration, or a related field (preferred).

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in recreational programming or a related field, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.

  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard training (required for aquatics positions).

  • Certification in Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) (preferred).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of recreation, athletic and aquatic programs, including coaching techniques, safety standards, and pool maintenance.

  • Ability to manage staff, delegate tasks, and maintain a positive, productive work environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and recreation management software.

  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and solve problems in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to engage and motivate community members.

Working Conditions:

  • The position may require evening, weekend, and holiday work, depending on program schedules.

  • The role involves both office and fieldwork, with exposure to outdoor weather conditions during athletic and aquatic activities.

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment, as well as stand or walk for extended periods during events.
